How to take dimensions of the pallet? After wrapping or before wrapping

When preparing cargo, pallet dimensions should typically be measured before wrapping.

Here’s why and when exceptions might apply:

1. Standard Practice: Measure Before Wrapping

Most logistics providers and carriers require dimensions of the pallet + cargo as stacked before wrapping.

Stretch wrap or thin plastic film conforms tightly to the load and adds negligible thickness (usually <1-2mm).

Shipping costs (e.g., volumetric weight) and cargo space calculations are based on the stable, pre-wrapped structure.

2. Exceptions: Measure After Wrapping

If you add bulky materials (e.g., padded corners, edge protectors, cardboard sheets, or a secondary box/cover), measure after securing these.

If the load shifts or expands slightly during wrapping (e.g., soft goods), confirm final dimensions post-wrap.

3. Key Tips

Check Carrier/Freight Forwarder Rules: Some may specify requirements (e.g., "dimensions after securing").

Account for Overhang: If wrapping creates protrusions (e.g., loose plastic), include them in measurements.

Safety First: Ensure wrapped pallets fit standard shipping containers and won’t collapse or exceed size limits.

When in doubt, clarify with your logistics provider to avoid surprises in pricing or rejections! 📦🚚
